You don't have to embrace or respect conspiratorial nonsense from anyone. Respecting your elders when they have looney ideas boils down to respecting their humanity by pointing out the fallibilit yof their remarks. Anything else is an attempt to indoctirnate you into their way thinking by getting you to concede to their authority. This is not the Clampdown as The Clash famously remarked!
