On August 12, 2016, my world and my family’s world, shattered into a million irreparable pieces. It was the day we lost our beloved daughter, Gemma Kathleen Lockwood, to the insidious grip of a drug overdose. Heroin and Xanax, a lethal combination, stole her away from us, leaving an unfathomable void in our lives.

Gemma wasn’t just a casualty of substance abuse; she was a casualty of circumstances deeply rooted in the dysfunction of our family. As the third of four daughters, Gemma bore witness to the spiritual decay growing within the confines of our home — a home marred by a turbulent and dysfunctional marriage. She was a silent observer to the animosity that consumed us, internalizing the pain that seeped through the crevices of our fractured existence.

I frame Gemma’s memory, as a quiet child, with strands of delicate white-blonde hair gathered about her angelic face. She found solace in her Chuckie Rugrats doll, clutching it tightly as if it were a lifeline to an alternate reality where innocence prevailed. Her left thumb was her constant companion, offering her a semblance of comfort in a world fraught with chaos.

Despite her outward tranquility, Gemma grappled with demons that transcended her tender age. Impulse control eluded her, and the concept of boundaries…
