Perilous Times for Humanity — Can Anything be done?

The conservative movement, religious retrenchment, and income inequality can have a significant impact on the ability of society to address issues such as climate change and civil rights. Conservative political ideologies often prioritize economic growth and individual freedom over environmental protection and civil rights, and may be less likely to support policies and regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and slowing the pace of climate change, as well as policies that protect civil rights for individuals. Similarly, religious groups that prioritize traditional beliefs over scientific evidence may reject the idea that human activity is causing climate change, and may also reject civil rights for certain groups of people, and therefore may be less likely to support efforts to address these issues. Income inequality can also play a role in hindering progress on climate change and civil rights, as those who are less well-off may be less able to advocate for and support policies that would address these issues, and may also be more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and discrimination.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report, human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, are the main drivers of climate change. It also states that without significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, global warming is likely to exceed 2°C above pre-industrial levels, which would have severe impacts on ecosystems, human health and economies, particularly on vulnerable communities…
