Genealogy Research in a Fascist America: Privacy Concerns and Potential Misuse
Genealogy research has become increasingly popular in recent years, with many people eager to uncover their family history and discover their roots. While this can be a fascinating and rewarding pursuit, it also raises important questions about privacy and the potential dangers of this information falling into the wrong hands. In particular, there are concerns about the ways in which genealogy data could be used in a future fascist America.
The rise of far-right movements and politicians in the United States and around the world has led many to worry about the possibility of a fascist future. In such a society, genealogy data could be used in a variety of nefarious ways. For example, it could be used to identify and target individuals or groups deemed undesirable by the government, such as immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and others. It could also be used to create a hierarchical social structure based on ancestry and genealogy, with those deemed to have “pure” or “superior” bloodlines given preferential treatment.
One potential source of concern is the ownership of genealogy websites by powerful individuals or organizations. Ancestry.com, one of the largest and most well-known genealogy websites, is owned by the private equity firm Blackstone Group.
