ChatGPT and K-12 Education

The use of chatbots such as ChatGPT in K-12 education has the potential to bring both positive and negative long-term implications.

On the positive side, ChatGPT and other chatbots can provide personalized and accessible educational support for students. For example, ChatGPT can be used to answer students’ questions and provide additional explanations or resources on various subjects (Paek, 2019). This can be especially beneficial for students who may struggle to keep up with the pace of their class or who need additional support to understand certain concepts (Wang et al., 2020).

Additionally, ChatGPT and other chatbots can be used to supplement traditional classroom instruction, allowing students to learn at their own pace and revisit concepts as needed (Buchem et al., 2016). This can help to create a more flexible and individualized learning environment for students, which can be particularly beneficial for those with different learning styles or needs (Wang et al., 2020).

However, there are also potential negative implications to consider when using ChatGPT and other chatbots in K-12 education. One concern is that chatbots may not be able to fully replace human interaction and support in the classroom (Paek, 2019). While chatbots can provide information and support, they may not be able to provide the same level of personalized feedback and guidance that a teacher or mentor can (Buchem et al., 2016).
